Why Smart Irrigation is Essential for Garden Bed Irrigation
Uneven moisture distribution is one of the leading causes of poor plant health when you’re growing on raised gardening beds.
For instance, during the summer, it's common for your flowerbeds to appear damp on the surface while remaining parched at the roots. This can weaken the roots and stunt plant growth. Here, consistent watering helps keep your plants hydrated, resulting in more even growth, higher yields, and more attractive blooms.
The Harvst WaterMate is a garden bed irrigation system designed to provide plants with precise watering at intervals based on their real-time needs. It tailors watering schedules based on temperature and humidity readings gathered from sensor data to offer a flexible, automated watering routine.
Consistent hydration prevents soil compaction and reduces plant stress, helping your valuable flowering plants produce vibrant, high-quality displays.

How WaterMate Works for Garden Beds
Harvst WaterMate is a solar watering system that waters garden beds using a dual zone system for drip irrigation, misting, drippers, sprayers, or soak hose. The WaterMate Mini is designed for up to 40 pots via 4L/hr standard drippers, and the WaterMate Pro is ideal for up to 120 pots via 4L/hr standard drippers.
It’s a solar-powered raised bed watering system that needs no mains power: 100% off grid.
The powerful pump means you don’t need a tap or garden hose, so it can run anywhere you have a water tank. If you have a tap, just leave out the pump.
It’s smart and saves water. It won’t water when the soil is moist, and can water extra when your plants need more.
The WaterMate tracks temperature and, coupled with a timed system, delivers just the right amount of water to your plants. It’s app-controlled, and if your allotment, garden, or greenhouse is within range of a WiFi network, you can manage and monitor from anywhere, and even receive email alerts.
Challenges That Automatic Watering Solves
Raised garden beds typically sit above the natural water table. Compared to the rest of the garden, they’re more likely to encounter rapid drying and drainage. This can be particularly challenging during the summer months, when strong winds and drying conditions are common.
A raised garden bed watering system is a smart solution to these challenges, eliminating inconsistent watering caused by bed height and dense foliage. WaterMate delivers water precisely when it matters most and even lets you custom-build your own irrigation system for garden beds.
Here’s How to Set up Watermate
The Benefits of a Raised Bed Irrigation System
So, what benefits can you enjoy by investing in a raised bed irrigation system?
Using an automated garden bed irrigation system means you can take a step back and enjoy watching your plants grow, without constant oversight. This setup means your plants receive the water they need and it takes the stress off you.
Automated watering also promotes hydration at the root zone while leaving foliage dry. This minimises plant diseases like powdery mildew, which are particularly common in raised garden beds.
With a system like WaterMate, you can spend less time maintaining your garden and more time enjoying it.
You can expect:
- Healthier plant growth
- Stronger root development and a higher quality yield
- Reduced water waste and plant stress
For you, this means:
- Less time spent watering and reduced manual effort
- The flexibility to run off-grid or use solar power
- Smart, sensor-driven data that adapts watering schedules automatically
How Smart Irrigation Improves Garden Bed Growing
If you’re a keen grower or hobbyist, you’ll know that consistent watering is essential for strong yields. While manual watering does also work, upgrading to a raised bed irrigation system gives you far greater control and allows you to grow more.
Targeted irrigation delivers water directly where it’s needed, reducing disruption to the soil while maintaining optimal moisture levels. The result is healthier plants, stronger roots, and more dependable harvests.
What you can achieve with our raised bed irrigation system:
- Spend less time watering
- Benefit from easy installation
- Have the option for a solar-powered setup
- Upgrade to dual-zone irrigation as your needs increase
- Pump from a water tank
- Be more environmentally responsive
- Control settings via an app
- Manage and monitor remotely
- Receive everything you need in one order, including pipes, fixings, sprayers and drippers
How to Install WaterMate
One of the biggest benefits of our irrigation system for garden beds is that it requires no specialist tools or expertise to install. Simply lay out your main distribution pipe along the centre or back of your garden bed, insert individual drippers near the plant base using a hole punch, and position a soaker hose around plants that need maximum hydration.
Secure the tubing in place with garden stakes as you set up your pipework. Once connected to your irrigation controller, your fully automated raised bed watering system is ready to go.
Use garden stakes to pin the tubing down as you set up your pipework. Click the system into your irrigation controller, and you’re all set to enjoy the benefits of a fully automated raised garden bed watering system.
WaterMate is powered by a built-in battery that can be charged via a solar panel, allowing you to run the system anywhere there’s sunshine. If you opt to use a solar panel, it will need to be mounted where it gets the most sunlight. Adjustable brackets are included, enabling secure installation on a timber frame, wall, or fence.
The solar panel is approximately 350 x 220 x 18mm in size.
You can automate watering even if your garden beds aren’t near a mains tap - simply position the system close to a water tank. The powerful pump delivers up to 17 litres per minute at 35psi, exceeding typical mains water pressure. If you have a water tap in or near your garden beds, you can connect it directly to the dual zone water valve and leave the pump out.
WaterMate uses sensors to change the watering regime based on the conditions in your garden. On a hot day, it’ll deliver more water – so your plants don’t suffer. On a cool day, or when the soil is already damp, it’ll deliver less water to make your tank last longer.

Off-Grid and Solar Power Use for Hanging Baskets
WaterMate’s solar-powered setup keeps your garden beds hydrated using stored energy. The system’s solar panel, controller, and battery combine to deliver reliable irrigation across off-grid areas.
WaterMate’s solar setup ensures your irrigation schedule runs like clockwork, even when you’re completely off-grid. A compact 10W solar panel charges an onboard battery, giving the controller enough power to water for 10 minutes / day during an averagely sunny day in the UK, which equates to 120 litres. Additional solar panels can be added for shady locations, or connected to mains power where available.
Benefits of a Solar-Powered Irrigation System:
- Fully wireless setup for simple installation
- Multi-day battery capacity for dependable watering
- Ideal for garden beds away from mains supply

FAQs
Is WaterMate a drip irrigation system?
Yes, WaterMate uses drip irrigation in that you can fit micro irrigation drippers to the hoses, but it is not gravity-fed. It’s a high-pressure system that helps prevent nozzle clogging. The benefits of this form of garden bed irrigation include the ability to deliver water only to the roots of a plant, as well as helping you save water.
Can I connect WaterMate to my mains power?
Yes, you can use mains power for the WaterMate if it’s available in the area. For this, we provide an alternative power supply unit instead of a solar panel.
Do I need Wi-Fi to use the WaterMate?
No! The WaterMate will run fine without WiFi. The raised bed irrigation system will transmit its own WiFi signal, which you can connect to when you’re within a few metres of the control unit.
Can I override the automatic watering manually?
Yes. If you’re near your garden, you can either use your smartphone or the button on the control unit to override automatic watering if you don’t have your phone.
How and where do I mount the solar panel?
We provide a versatile solar panel mounting bracket in our WaterMate bundle, which you can screw to a wall or post. Place the solar panel in the optimum position for sunshine up to 3m away from the control unit. Solar panel extension cables are available.
Is the pump noisy?
No, WaterMate is remarkably quiet for such a powerful pump. It’s mounted on rubber feet, and if you place it in a suitable location, you probably won’t hear it running at all!
What irrigation parts are compatible with WaterMate?
We’ve designed our garden bed irrigation system to work with any off-the-shelf irrigation and micro-irrigation parts. All kits come with 13mm LDPE pipe, 4mm micro irrigation kits, and a selection of spray nozzles for you to experiment with. When you’ve decided what you like, you can add more.
Are replacement parts available?
Yes, all components are available as replacements or upgrades. We offer a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty on all major components, and the batteries in our solar units are warranted for 1 year from purchase.
What about frost damage? Should you decommission the WaterMate for winter?
The WaterMate raised bed watering system has automatic frost damage protection, so you don’t have to decommission it for winter. It won’t run the pump if the temperature falls below 1 degree centigrade.
What about airlocks? Is the WaterMate reliable?
The WaterMate’s powerful self-priming pump does not get airlocks, so if your water tank runs dry and then refills later, your garden bed irrigation system will restart without needing you to prime it.
How long can the pipes be?
The WaterMate Pro pump can provide water for many tens of metres of pipe, and up to 5m of vertical head. If you add too many drippers and water outlets to the line, the flow rate per outlet will drop.
A pipe that's too long, and your first outlets will start working a long time before your last ones, leading to overwatered plants at the start and underwatered plants at the end. Try to set up your irrigation system in a ring to avoid this.
We provide 4m of inlet hose (between the water tank and the pump), but the system will run with at least 10m of inlet hose and a 4m vertical head. The pump is self-priming.
Can I use a tap instead of the pump?
Yes! WaterMate will work fine with a tap, so you don’t need a pump in this case. Just select the garden hose choice when you order. The hose (which needs to be left on) connects to the dual watering zone valves, which act as electric taps.
